Paying homage to our heritage, Transylvanian Roots is a visual representation of our ancestors with their rich folk art and textile history.
Once an independent country, Transylvania was for centuries a melting pot of peoples, cultures, traditions and religions, from Saxons, Hungarians and Romanians to Szekely, Ashkenazi Jews, Armenians and Gypsies. Surrounded by mountains and forests, united in their communion with nature and their love for the abundant land around them, nobles and villagers alike grew fruits and vegetables, picked flowers and hunted wild boar and roebuck, alongside their loyal hounds.
Traditional countryside homes reflected the villagers respect for the flora and fauna surrounding them, witnessed by naturalistic motifs woven into local handicrafts, from wood cutting and block printing to tapestry and embroidery. Long winter nights were spent embellishing and decorating. Trimmed and tasseled lampshades brightened dark corners, while wooden furniture was softened with hand-embroidered cushions. Retracting the narratives of our ancestors, we have ravelled throughout Transylvania, collecting patterns and memories to recreate our past. Bursting with decoration, pattern and colour, each symbol and motif references our cultural and artistic legacy, from natural plant-based remedies and richly patterned ceramics to tales of falcons and mythical wild horses, whispered between generations in the dense cherry orchards.
Welcome to our roots, in Transylvania, and join us in celebrating this uniquely romantic time when wild animals wandered through picturesque forests in the perfect scenery for cultural harmony.
